how XP in a dual system, dual system questions [internal zip drive] [athalon xp]

Question 1:
I was planing on going with 2 MP 1600 +, but my girlfriend says I can save a lot of money by buying XP instead and just connecting the L5 bridges. that is my main question how thoes connection bridges.

Question 2:
im still not sure what PWS get. same man suggested I go with a 400W link world:

Best Answer: Insert your Vista Installation CD and run a repair installation. During this process it should detect all Windows installations and HOPEFULLY rebuild your dual boot feature.

What you should have done is install XP first, then Vista. Without getting really technical and throwing a ton of instructions at you on how to boot to DOS and manipulate very sensitive files, it would be easier to just run a repair installation of Vista. Some of your Vista settings may be reset and you may have to re-install some programs, but unless you wipe out the partition, your other data should still be there.

Vista needs to re-examine your MBR [Master Boot Record] & MFT [Master File Table] and possibly rebuild it.
Re:Your taking pot luck with any XP proccessor , just as I did with my 1.3ghz Durons (they worked fine) .

Re:The 510-watt Antec ONLY works with the Tyan K7 Thunder (S2462) motherboard. The connector is proprietary and will not work with any other board. All other dual processor AMD boards, including the Tyan Tiger MPX, use a standard powersupply.

If you are going XP1600's, your L5 bridge may or may not be cut. If it is, you will have to reconnect it. Here (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/print.hwz?cid=2&aid=393) are the instructions.

How can I reinstall Windows on a terminally unstable system? [unstable system] [processor support]

Okay update, I can not back my “98 updates CD from DOS. Is there another way to do this, maybe safe mode, so that Windows is stable long enough to take the update?

There? is much disagreement among my posts about whether it? possible to install win98 se from a DOS boot disk in a previous installation of Windows. Many people say that Microsoft is only one look at the original disk is 98, but that installing directly from SE Dos possible. But then I found this in the readme file for 98SE .

So who? Is it true? I do have a 98se install DOS to a certain stability to prevent problems, so it would be great to know. Oh yes, how do you remove the drivers through, if there isn? T an uninstall option available?

Re:When an upgrade package is applied to a system, the setup routine often checks to see if there is a qualifying installed system that makes the upgrade legit. This is referred to as "sniffing" by many techs (including me!) Anyway, with a clean install (a freshly formatted drive) there is nothing to sniff. So, the program lets you insert a qualifying CD or diskette to pass the "sniff test." It is analogous to dogs getting acquainted.
Re:Dude! Even if you get the upgrade CD to install over your current installation, I am willing to bet your system is still going to be hosed.

If you don't do a format and full reinstall, remove/reinstall all your devices as guy has suggested and as I had suggested in your old thread entitled "Is this problem too tough for Anandtech?".

Personally, if I were you and I decided to do a full reinstall, I would borrow a full win98se cd from someone…and if it didn't accept your cd key codes you can easilly debug two lines in pidgen.dll to make it accept them, which I do not see as being unethical because you HAVE bought 98 and a 98se upgrade.

On second thought, maybe you should just take your PC to a reputable shop (not BB) and pay someone to take care of it for you.

(BTW, do you really need 3 threads?)
Re:Okay, so I can only to the upgrade from within windows 98.. But I still have all those stability problems that make it nigh on impossible. Can I do it from safe mode or something that will allow my machine to get through the process?

Re:It can be confusing when one states "Win98SE upgrade CD".
I've got that $20 upgrade CD. The one that you had to get directly
from Microsoft. It can only be installed with Win98 running!
The other "Win98SE upgrade CD" that cost $89 and could be
purchased at any retail store CAN be installed from a DOS prompt.

could this be a Start in the proper direction…but in your Win98 case its System Device Manager…you get to delve into all the items listed saving the IDE controllers for last…unistall {better have a proper(full version) CD of Win98 and your other drivers…just in case)} all referenced Via lines the machine will try to reboot after just about every uninstall possibly but click until done…reboot and be ready with your CDs..you will need them. As ALWAYS Your Mileage May Vary undertake this only after having BackedUp your Comp

Re:uhm… … you did not go/read the via page that I linked to as it tells you how to uninstall viadrivers..beware tho you had better have some drivers (via) on a CD/FD for reinstallation…."clean"===uncorrupted/noscratches/etc….. "sniff"===the process whereby a Win upgrade CD is used to install OS ..the original("clean") Win9x CD is glanced at by the upgrade Win CD
Re:Uh, "sniffing, clean" haven't heard those before. Could you describe the process a little differently for me? Also, I'm using the 4.31 drivers that cam with my AK31. There really isn't an uninstall option I can see, even browsing around on the disk. Thanks,

Re:The upgrade 98SE will install from the DOS prompt . . . but it will need the original CD if it is "clean" for the "sniff" phase. Otherwise, it will proceed to exit. If you are in fact upgrading, why not do it the easy way?

Re:I've done "fresh" installs withe the 98SE Upgrade CD from DOS, so has many others…by the way that sounds, it seems to me that you have the "UPDATE" CD, which Microsoft put out for sell, for like 20.00, it included all the updates for 98, that I could see not being able to install from DOS.
[edit] I should probably call it the Windows98 Service Pack CD
